Aviaries
You don’t need permissions from council to build or install an aviary if:
- It is for domestic use only
Number
- There are no more than 2 per property
Size
- In a rural zone it is;
- no larger than 30sqm
- no taller than 3m
- In all other zones it is;
- no larger than 10sqm
- no taller than 2.4m
Location
- In a rural zone it is;
- 20m from any road boundary
- a minimum of 5m from all boundaries
- In all other zones it is;
- in the back yard
- a minimum of 900mm from the side and rear boundaries
Other
- The floor is to be impervious
- The disposal of any roof water must not cause a nuisance to adjoining owners
- In residential zones, any metal parts of the structure are to be low reflective, factory pre coloured materials
- If your house is located on bushfire prone land and the aviary is going to be located less than 5m from your house or a neighbours house the aviary must be constructed of non-combustible materials
You do need permission to install an aviary if:
- You do not meet all of the above requirements
- Your property is in a foreshore area
