Access Ramps

You don’t need permission from council to build an access ramp if: 

  • The ramp is no higher than 1m above the ground
  • The ramp is a minimum of 450mm from the side and rear boundary line
  • The ramp must not adversely affect the stormwater system including any drainage grates
  • The ramp does not obstruct the natural surface flow of water
  • If the ramp is on bush fire prone land and within 5m of a house it must be built of non-combustible materials
  • If your property is a listed heritage item or within a heritage conservation area the access ramp must be in the back yard
  • The new ramp must be constructed in accordance with AS 1428.1—2009, Design for access and mobility—General requirements for access—New building work and the Disability (Access to Premises – Buildings) Standard 2010

You do need permission to build an access ramp if:

  • You do not meet all of the above requirement
